Journeys of a Growing Programmer

July 02nd, 2008 | Category: Life, Tech
I like to consider myself a geek. I listen to 80+ podcasts, more than most can name off the top of their heads. I’m darn handy at Mac OS X, Windows (i don’t like to admit that) and Linux. I’ve troubleshooted many a computer, and am my family and neighbor’s go to guy for tech. I understand how a lot of technology works, and regularly use that knowledge. I have more friends online then in real life, and I spend the majority of my time on the computer (and for those screaming “GET A LIFE” I enjoy every minute of it). One flaw I always knew about in my geekiness was that I was programming and Internet coding stupid. There are people who know and regularly code in more languages than I can name off (I can name 14) and i feel sad :-( So i have decided to learn HTML and a programming language. With the help of Leo Laporte (the Tech Guy, #468, around 1:13 into it), I have decided to learn Python. I will talk more specifically about this later. I hope after learning HTML, to learn XHTML and CSS, and once I learned Python I would like to learn some other Obj. Oriented programming, like Obj. C. My Plans for Summer 08

June 18th, 2008 | Category: Blogging, Life, Tech

I know this post is along time coming, but here are my plans for this summer.

1. My first priority will be getting/staying in shape for crew (rowing). This is a two part process. The first is doing a summer competitive rowing camp that has practices 8-10 times a week. Then I will be working out on my own 3-4 times a week in addition. I plan on being very fast by the end of the summer when head racing season starts.

2. My next priority is schoolwork. I have two classes, AP European History and Honors Algebra II/Geometry that require summer work. I am turning over a new leaf and doing the work a little at a time, instead of waiting til the week before the beginning of school. I also will have a few books to read for english class, but I enjoy reading, so that is not a problem. In addition, for the AP Euro I have found a podcast through Allison Sheradon from the Nosillacast Podcast, called Hank’s History Hour that I will listen to throughout the summer.

3. Next is new media. In addition to blogging here and tweeting, I will try to regularly participate in the International Mac Podcast, both on the blog and in the podcast. And any other podcast someone invites me on, I would be happy to join them. If you want to get me on your show by the way, drop me a line using the link to the right.

4. Lastly, I will be getting a job over the summer, at a local book store in my area, called the Penguin Bookshop. Once they are done remodeling, which should be in the next month or so, I will be restocking shelves with books for the grand reopening in the fall. I think this is a great job because i love books, and because I am only putting books on their places on shelves, I can basically just listen to podcasts the whole time! w00t. I also will be doing some babysitting, work in the yard for my mom (for money of course), and tech support for anyone in my area.

There will be some other things, but that is about it. If you have any other ideas, leave a comment below!

My Europe Trip-Munich

June 16th, 2008 | Category: Life

June 14-15

After leaving Neuschwainstein, we drove to Munich. After checking into our hotel, we walked around in Munich for awhile then went to the Hofbrau haus, which is German for Beer House, and it was a lot of fun. Although I did not have one, they had enormous 1 Liter Beer mugs, and delicious German food. Full of Sausage (and my parents full of beer) we head back to the hotel.

The next day, we first went to the OlympiaPark, the site of the 1972 Olympics, then to Dachäu, an old concentration camp, and during World War II, it was considered one of the model concentration camps, which others were designed after. We then drove to our final hotel near the airport, and walked to a traditional German restaurant, with delicious sausages. I had a great time in Europe, but was glad to be heading home to the land of free Internet and extra large portions.
